Ocean Drive
Perched along the coastline on Ocean Drive, this custom build - designed by local architect Simon Hayward - was carefully brought to life to embrace its stunning surroundings while meeting the changing needs of a growing young family.
Built on a steeply sloping block, the home has been thoughtfully designed to work with the natural landscape rather than against it, stepping seamlessly with the site and minimising disruption by utilising the footprint of the original dwelling.
Although the residence spans three functional levels, its refined street presence maintains the appearance of a sophisticated two-storey home. From the moment you enter, the main living level becomes the heart of the home - a light-filled, highly connected space designed for everyday family living and effortless entertaining. Expansive glazing and large sliding doors capture sweeping ocean views while allowing natural light and coastal breezes to flow throughout the interiors.
Outdoor living was a key focus of the design, with covered entertaining areas positioned to the east and west to encourage year-round use and enhance passive climate control. The seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces creates a relaxed coastal lifestyle perfectly suited to the home’s location.
The layout has also been carefully considered to provide long-term flexibility for the family. Bedrooms are thoughtfully positioned across the upper and lower levels, while the lower floor functions as a private retreat ideal for guests, extended family, or future adaptability as needs evolve over time.
A timeless material palette featuring natural stone, timber, burnished concrete, and textured tiles was selected to complement the coastal setting while ensuring durability and warmth. One of the home’s defining features is the striking stone wall that flows continuously from the exterior into the interior, creating a strong visual connection between the architecture and the surrounding landscape.
Delivering this home on a challenging sloping coastal site required extensive planning, collaboration, and craftsmanship from start to finish. The result is a highly considered residence that balances functionality, resilience, and refined coastal living.
